Macro’s can make your life a lot easier when you do repetitive tasks in office packages such as Microsoft Word and Excel. I used to work at an international office where we received documents from abroad, these documents were in the foreign page size which we did not have much of so I needed to change the page size for all the documents that came in.

Imagine doing that over 10 times a day. Not fun and takes time. Ok not hours but 10 was the least number of documents I ever got in. Usually 50 or more.

What I did was record a macro. Think of a macro as an old fashioned tape recorder. All it does is record everything you do, when you play it, it just does what you did. Looking at my example above I recorded myself going into File and Page Setup, changing the page size to A4 then stopped recording.

Then I added a button to the toolbar that ran that macro and each time I received a document in Letter I would press the button and it would change the page size to A4. If I pressed it on a document that was already A4 nothing seemed to happen.

What it is doing is recording and converting into a programming language. That language can be added to and changed depending on what you need, but you can always start by recording and adding a button to your toolbar, quick links bar, or ribbon (depending on your version).
